Professor Mitchell is a frequent and much appreciated guest in Denmark, and we welcome the fact that he of all men has taken on his shoulders the burdensome task of composing a survey of Danish literature and Danish authors throughout the ages. It is a big effort, as he is responsible for the whole book, except for the introductory chapter, on Danish literature before 1300, which is written by Hr. Mogens Haugsted, M.A., Deputy Chief Librarian in the Royal Library in Copenhagen. To some foreign readers, whose knowledge of Danish classics is limited to Hans Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard and perhaps a few others, the scope may not seem impressive, but connoisseurs in Denmark and abroad will estimate the achievement as one they might have shrunk from themselves, since it is next to impossible for one man to command the whole field. So there is ample justification for this survey, which introduces Danish literature to English‐speaking audiences throughout the world; and when reading the inevitable criticism of some weak points below, this should be borne in mind.
