– The duration of swallowing and the duration of the movement of the hyoid bone during swallowing was studied cineradiographically in 10 female volunteers, aged 19–24 years. Comparisons were made between the times of various stages of the act of swallowing of watery barium and viscous barium before and during anesthesia of the temporomandibular joints. Anesthesia had no effect on the duration of swallowing or of the movements of the hyoid bone. The median duration of swallowing and of the movements of the hyoid bone was longer for viscous barium (approx. 2.3 s) than for watery barium (approx. 1.6 s). The interindividual variation of the duration of swallowing and of the movements of the hyoid bone was wide. On the other hand, the ranking of the experimental subjects according to the duration of swallowing and the duration of movement of the hyoid bone was fairly constant in all of the recorded swallowings.
