Abstract Background  Intra‐ and inter‐species transmission of Human herpesvirus type 1 were noticed. In the present study, the herpesviral infection of a 1‐year‐old Azara’s Night Monkey ( Aotus azarae ) was investigated. Methods  Immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy investigations were done. Results  A fatal systemic herpesviral infection was demonstrated. Conclusion The results reveal the susceptibility of Azara’s Night Monkey to the Human herpesvirus type 1 . Moreover, humans shedding herpes viral particles during the reactivation phase of the infection directly infect the Azara’s Night Monkeys.
