The Animal Welfare Act (Publie Law 89‐544, as amended) was passed by Congress to assure the humane care and treatment of certain warmblooded animals bought, sold. held. or transported for purposes of research, exhibition, or for use as pets. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is responsible for administering the minimum care and treatment requirements promulgated under the authorities of this law. This paper presents in some detail the requirements and responsibilities of users of nonhuman primates for research, testing, or experimentation.
