Hematopoiesis is regulated by a complex network of soluble stimulators and inhibitors, as well as by cellular interactions in the bone marrow microenvironment. Progress in molecular biology and protein biochemistry has provided a number of hemopoietic growth factors that are now available in large quantities for in vitro and in vivo studies. Several of them seem to hold great promise for patients suffering from insufficient hematopoiesis of various causes. This review focusses on new developments in the understanding of hemopoietic growth factors activity, and on recent clinical data.
