Historically, control of bleeding in the mouth has been a challenge to oral surgeons who treat patients with acquired, idiopathic and congenital bleeding disorders. This discussion focuses on the local measures currently utilized to control bleeding in the oral cavity. It is the author's contention that the use of adjunctive local measures can make dental surgery safe for patients suffering from platelet dysfunction and from coagulation disorders, and safe as well for those patients with inhibitors to the usual corrective measures for their congenital coagulopathy. Different techniques and agents have different property characteristics, but when judiciously utilized the practitioner can derive tremendous benefit from them for the bleeding patient.
