The results of surgical synovectomy for haemophilic arthropathy of 9 knees in 8 haemophiliacs were evaluated. Finally intra‐articular bleeding ceased in 3, reduced in 2 and was unchanged in 3 knees. Synovectomy can be regarded as an effective procedure for haemophilic arthropathy in terms of haemostasis. Preoperative radiographs in unsuccessful cases showed more advanced changes of arthropathy and the age at operation was all over 20 years old. Five knees reduced in joint mobility after the operation. There was less progression of radiological arthropathic changes in the knees where intra‐articular bleeding ceased or reduced postoperatively, whereas no knees showed radiological improvement of arthropathy. Synovectomy should be viewed as a haemostatic procedure and be performed on those under 20 years of age with radiologically less advanced arthropathy joint, when sufficient conservative treatment has failed to eliminate repeated haemarthroses.
