The bone marrow was examined on material obtained with the Gidlund trephine and with conventional cytologic bone marrow aspiration in 225 patients with malignant disease, 144 of whom had malignant lymphoma, and in 5 patients with haematological, non‐malignant disease. With Gidlund's instrument, the malignant disease was found to engage the bone marrow in 35 cases as compared to 7 cases with needle biopsy. No complications were met with either technique. Bone marrow biopsy was routinely performed in the out‐patient department.
