30 healthy male subjects were given an isocaloric meal composed mainly of saturated or unsaturated fat. Before and 2 h after the completion of the meal plasma and platelet lipids, platelet factor 3 and platelet factor 4 activity were examined. During alimentary hyperlipaemia a significant increase of platelet triglycerides was seen after both meals. The platelet triglycerides reflected the dietary fatty acids. After the saturated fatty meal an increase of platelet factor 4 activity was present in platelet poor plasma and a decrease in platelet factor 3 availability was present. In 5 subjects with primary hyperlipoproteinaemia all characterized by high levels of plasma triglycerides, the platelet triglycerides and the platelet factor 3 activity and availability were similar to what was found in normal fasting subjects.
