The present data indicate that disseminated intravascular coagulation experimentally induced leads both to consumption as well as synthesis of clotting factors. In massive DIC all parameters are markedly affected, and the diagnosis easily settled. In low graded DIC normal or even high levels of clotting factors may be met with. In this situation the ethanol gelation test appears to be a sensitive indicator.
