45 patients with chronic non‐specific obstructive lung disease had a whole body/venous haematocrit ratio of 0.86 ± 0.008 SEM. This is lower than the ratio found in normal adults. For greatest accuracy independent measurement of red cell and plasma volumes should be undertaken in this condition.
