The absorption of iron was studied before and during oral contraceptive therapy in 6 normal women using a whole body counter. The absorption was measured 4 times in each subject. The basal absorption during therapy was unchanged compared to the basal absorption before treatment. After phlebotomy the absorption increased to the same extent before as well as during contraceptive therapy. Plasma iron concentration and TIBC increased during the therapy. The reason for the increased plasma iron concentration is probably that there was an increased mobilization of iron from stores mediated by the elevated transferrin concentration.
