Azure B has been used as a metachromatic stain for the quantitative cytochemical estimation of total RNA in developing erythroblasts. The megaloblasts of pernicious anaemia show a progressive reduction of RNA with increasing maturity; the decrease being similar to that seen during normal erythropoiesis.
