The population kinetics of the red cell system was simulated on a digital computer. Disturbances in red cell production and survival characteristics were imposed on the system in order to imitate various non‐stationary conditions. The consequences of assuming stationarity were systematically investigated from the point of view of conclusions concerning the mean cell life span.
