A five‐year‐old boy, previously healthy, was found to have profound anaemia without evidence of bleeding or haemolysis. The erythropoiesis showed profound maturation arrest at the pro‐erythroblast stage. Other cell lines were normal. The patient was treated with prednisone and azathioprine. Complete remission occurred after four months.
