During routine examination of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate in blood donors an unusual sedimentation pattern was found in two healthy males. The sedimentation curve showed a very pronounced S‐shaped course, the lag phase varying between 15 and 60 minutes followed by a period of very rapid sedimentation. The routine reading of the ESR of these donors after one hour therefore gave very inconsistent results. The phenomenon seems to be due to a factor located to the red cells. It is strongly dependent upon pH and temperature.
