An automatic apparatus designed for the defibrination of small blood samples in a standard manner is described. The use and characteristics of the apparatus are considered and compared with existing techniques. The apparatus offers several advantages over existing methods; these are minimal cell trauma, high yield of defibrinated blood, substantial neutrophil but limited lymphocyte removal and only a slight rise in the blood pH value. The method is simple and gives reproducible results. It is suitable for the preparation of defibrinated blood both for routine or special purposes.
