Large amounts of cryoglobulin, about 20 mg/ml, were discovered in the serum of a woman suffering from recurrent aphthous stomatitis. The cold precipitable protein was found to be a polyclonal immunoglobulin of type G. It contained some beta 1A ‐beta 1C ‐globulin, and possessed a heat labile anticomplementary effect. Most of the tests for rheumatoid factor activity gave negative results. On ultracentrifugation at +36°C, the cryoglobulin sedimented as a homogeneous 7.8 S° 20w peak. Although the ulcerative stomatitis was painful, the patient otherwise remained in good health. Sometimes she was a little anaemic. The granulocyte count was low in the peripheral blood. The bone marrow was hypocellular, with increased numbers of plasma cells and lymphocytes.
