A 75 year old and hitherto healthy man developed a severe haemorrhagic diathesis after electric shock therapy. Coagulation studies revealed a coagulation defect due to a specific inhibitor of Factor VIII. The inhibitor seemed to be of enzymatic nature. The patient received no blood transfusions or protein injections or other treatment which could fully explain the development of the inhibitor. It therefore seems likely that the inhibitor production was induced by the electric shock therapy.
