The mitotic index and uptake of tritiated thymidine after 3 days culture with phytohaemagglutinin was markedly lower in lymphocytes from patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia than in lymphocytes from normal persons. The number of lymphocytes in leukaemic blood showed a strong negative correlation with the percentage of tritium labelled cells in culture, and a similar but nonsignificant correlation with the mitotic index. The reduced response of leukaemic cells was not due to cell damage caused by treatment.
