The standard method of measuring red blood cell survival has been adopted to measure the haemoglobin of the supernatant haemolysate or of the unhaemolysed residual cells. Since haemoglobin determination is per se simpler and more precise than red cell counting, this technique was utilized. We have shown that this approach is practical, requires small quantities of blood and yields reliable and meaningful data with a minimum of equipment and effort. Above all, with this modification, we can do without the skilled technician, who alone is able to count free red cells in a morass of agglutinates.
