Ninety cultures of heterotrophic organisms were isolated from soils of four acid Norwegian forest sites, which were active in nitrifying. The isolates were tested for ability to form nitrite in a glucose‐ammonium‐inorganic salts medium. Eleven cultures were found capable of oxidizing ammonium to nitrite. The nitrifying organisms consist of 4 bacteria and 7 fungi.
