When iodoxuridine (IDU) – carried in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) – was topically applied on penile lesions suspected to be herpes simplex, premalignant epidermal changes developed. Discontinuation of treatment resulted in complete healing. It seems wise when IDU in DMSO is used for similar cases, to consider this treatment experimental because both constituents of this preparation are, in theory, potentially carcinogenic.
