A bstract In order to study the provision of dental care and preventive measures for institutionalized mentally subnormal persons in Norway, a random sample of individuals ( n = 353) was investigated. The provision of regular dental care was found to be dependent on institutional size rather than on geographic location. The number of institutionalized patients was evenly distributed in relation to population density in different areas of the country. A total of 37 % of the patients received no regular care. Access to dental care decreased with increasing age, presumably because most of the younger patients were domiciled in the larger institutions. Comprehensive programs for the prevention of dental disease were established in only a few institutions.
