Following a dental examination of 5‐year‐old children, the mothers of 367 of them were interviewed. Some of the questions related to the mother's awareness of the dental and gingival condition of her child. The replies were then related to the clinical findings. It was found that many of the mothers had an over‐optimistic opinion of the child's dental condition and that very few of them were over‐pessimistic. This lack of knowledge about existing dental disease is a major factor in the gap between the dental need of the community and the demands made for treatment.
