A review of the literature was made, focusing on experimental designs used in clinical studies for assessment of the efficacy of interdental cleaning aids with regard to plaque removal and the prevention of caries and gingivitis. After careful consideration of the pros and cons of published procedures, an experimental design for such studies is proposed.
