It is shown that many periodontal problems can be evaluated by examining stained, extracted teeth. Presence or absence of gingival inflammation around the tooth before extraction can be established after extraction on the basis of presence or absence of plaque. Loss of attachment and its relationship to local etiological factors can also be established. The method is particularly useful for experimental investigation on periodontal problems in man.
