The author addresses professor Murphy's questioning of the dependency of various dichotomies in the field. This refers toa) the definition of disciplines, b) definition of explanatory variables, c) theoretical debates in the literature on the determinants of mental disoder, and d) debates on how to explain variations in rates of mental disorder among different status or class groups. Attention is drawn to how we might function differently if we did away with some of these dichotomies, and dealt with continuous variables and interactive models.
