It is reasonable to postulate that age will affect attitudes to research and appraisals of projects'social relevance. In fact, the expectation that the values assigned to research projects would relate to the rater's age receives little support. The young tended to be more parsimonious and the elderly more generous; otherwise differences between age groups were samll, few, inconsistent, and without a discernible pattern.
