Of late there has been increasing emphasis in scientific quarters of the importance of considering ethical aspects of research on human beings. It seems evident that research with individuals should carry with it a firm commitment of the investigator to the fundamental ethical tenet of the profession, namely that the welfare of the subject has the highest priority. The very fact that this principle is so obvious may account for the long delay in establishing international agreement concerning the application of ethical rules (e.g. the Helsinki declaration). Three main problems have generally been discussed within this area: 1. The problem of informed consent 2. The relation of use of human individuals as research subjects to their rights of privacy and anonymity 3. The risk-benefit balance.
