Preliminary findings are reported from a study in Mannheim, using in translation the Schedule of Children's Handicaps, Behaviour and Skills (HBS‐Schedule) developed by Wing (1973). This instrument yields distinctive profiles of handicap which may be valuable in assessing children's special needs for care and education. Scores derived from joint interviews with the mothers of 15 children showed very good agreement between trained interviewers. On the other hand, a generally lower level of agreement was found between the information obtained from the mothers and that supplied at separate interviews by the children's class‐teachers. These findings are discussed in relation to the problem of assessing validity.
