Social insurance in Sweden comprises industrial injury insurance, unemployment insurance and general insurance. The latter has three branches: sickness insurance, national basic pensions (AFP) and national supplementary pensions (ATP). Indicators of morbidity have been obtained from documents concerning general insurance. Individual participation in the general insurance system is compulsory from the age of 16, children being included via their parents. Utilization of sickness insurance is determined by many factors. Social characteristics, such as income, are of importance, as well as the type and severity of the disorder and individual attitudes to health and medical care (Westrin 1973). When information from the general insurance records is used to obtain morbidity indicators these selective forces must be kept in mind. From the Provincial Social Insurance Authority I obtained copies of registercards (F-kort), medical certificates from retirement and other information.
