A study was made of 612 psychotic outpatients, followed by means of a national case register from their first referral in 1946 to 1955 up to and including 1973. One hundred and sixty‐four cases were not found to be registered as inpatients and so must be counted as lost to a registration system based upon hospital admissions. The loss of cases was estimated at around 5 % of the total first admissions. Most of the lost cases were borderline psychotics or manic depressives.
