Many of the chapters of this book first appeared as journal articles in a special edition of Africa Development (Vol. 29, No. 1, 2004). The new additions are original chapters except for those written by Wilfred David and Kwesi Prah which have also been slightly modified to fit the present format. Research on development in general has focused mainly on issues of economics, but this collection attempts something different by looking at the topic from a phylosophical angle. I wish to acknowledge the encouragement of former Executive Secretary of CODESRIA, Professor Adebayo Olukoshi, who first requested that the topic of development be researched from a more theoretically comprehensive position, and all my colleagues who have contributed to the volume, for this new dimension of looking at the development impasse in Africa.
