‐ β2–microglobulin was measured in the CSF of 33 MS patients (age range 26–66 years) and compared with the 95% confidence interval determined in an age‐matched reference group of 32 patients without neurologic disease. Six MS (18%) had moderately increased concentrations and this subgroup was characterized by severe neurologic impairment according to Kurtzke's expanded disability scale. Increased CSF β2‐microglobulin concentration in MS may reflect lesion formation.
