I t i s known from a number o f o t h e r s t u d i e s t h a t t h e r e i s a lower b l o o d p r e s s u r e l i m i t o f a u t o r e g u l a t i o n o f c e r e b r a l b l o o d f l o w . I f t h e b l o o d p r e s s u r e f a l l s below a c e r t a i n l e v e l , a u t o r e g u l a t o r y v a s o d i l a t a t i o n becomes i n a d e q u a t e , and c e r e b r a l b l o o d f l o w d e c r e a s e s . I n t h e p r e s e n t s t u d y , i t h a s been shown t h a t i n p a t i e n t s w i t h severe, u n t r e a t e d o r u n c o n t r o l l e d h y p e r t e n s i o n , t h e lower l i m i t o f a u t o r e g u l a t i o n o f cereb r a l b lood f l o w i s s h i f t e d towards h i g h b l o o d p r e s s u r e , t h u s d e c r e a s i n g t h e t o l e r a n c e t o a c u t e h y p o t e n s i o n . T h i s i s a f u n c t i o n a l cor re la te of t h e m o r p h o l o g i c a l changes p r e s e n t i n h y p e r t e n s i v e a r t e r io l e s , i . e . w a l l t h i c k e n i n g and l u m i n a l nar rowing .
