A review of 220 children led to the conclusion that clonazepam is a useful addition to available methods of treating epilepsy in young patients. The original expectations were largely fulfilled during the 2‐year period, and the success rate rose with increasing experience in the choice of indications. We now believe that the presence of spike and wave variant‐paroxysms in the EEG, rather than a given type of seizure, represents the indication for clonazepam, and that the prospects of successful treatment are relatively good. Drops are the dosage form of choice. The results of treatment are not markedly dose‐related, that is, response is quickly apparent even after small doses, which should be adjusted gradually to establish the optimum level. The only side effect observed was tiredness. Clonazepam represented a decisive advance for some of our patients, and one that cannot be paralleled by any other substance at the present time.
