The results of 100 lumbar myelographies with the water‐soluble contrast medium Conray Meglumin 282 are reported. The dose of contrast medium was 7 ml mixed with 3 ml cerebrospinal fluid in the first 30 examinations and 4 ml mixed with 3 ml cerebrospinal fluid in the last 70 examinations. The quality of the radiograms was good and superior to those obtained with Myelotrast, even with the lowest dose. No serious complications were seen. Reduction of the dose reduced the frequency of adverse effects from the leg muscles, but did not reduce the frequency of headache and nausea. Clonic spasms in the leg muscles seemed to occur more frequently in men than in women, while headache and nausea were seen more often in women. An attempt of objective registration of the irritative effects of the contrast medium was made by means of electromyographic, electrocardiographic and intravesical pressure recordings during the myelography. Very few changes were found by these methods. It is concluded that a thorough examination of the patients is essential to secure a satisfactory registration of the adverse effects, as these usually are very slight and often scarcely noticed by the patients.
