Two clinically different types of eye disease are often referred to as “retinal periphlebitis”. Very mild perivenous changes are found in one type. These changes never lead to hemorrhages. A relationship to multiple sclerosis has repeatedly been observed. Hemorrhages and severe complications are typically found in another type. This ocular disease is sometimes associated with symptoms strongly suggesting a vascular disease in the spinal cord. Three cases with moderately severe “retinal periphlebitis” are reported in the present paper; the relation of their neurological disease to multiple sclerosis is discussed.
