Estimates of the rate of development of thoracic musculature in male flies captured in the field, and in laboratory‐reared males of Glossina morsitans , show that laboratory flies take more than twice as long as field flies to attain full development. The rate of development during the first hunger cycle can be increased to normal levels if laboratory‐reared flies are induced to fly soon after they have taken their first blood meal.
