Reasons for expressed interest in exercise and weight control were examined. The importance of benefit statements was rated on a scale of one to ten by subjects grouped according to age. Results indicated that 18 to 30 year‐old subjects rated benefits pertaining to aesthetic enhancement of physical appearance as significantly more important than all other benefits. Also, the benefits pertaining to health and aesthetic enhancement were rated as significantly more important than social and emotional benefits and training benefits by subjects ranging in age from 31 to 50 years. It was concluded that regrdless of age, subjects are equally as interested or more interested in aesthetic benefits as compared to health benefits resulting from fitness‐related activity.
