The Ascription of Responsibility Questionnaire (ARQ), consisting of 13 biographical and 28 attitudinal items, was designed to study one aspect of attribution: ascribing responsibility for particular events to specific persons or to diffuse and depersonalized forces. The questionnaire was administered to 251 university summer session students. Factor analyses showed 4 orthogonal factors, which were labeled traditional focused responsibility, diffuse responsibility, exercised responsibility, and individual focused responsibility. Six groups of subjects could be clearly differentiated on the patterns of their scores on these factors. Correlations with other personality tests and with demographic variables were found.
