The standard gamble is a method used to measure health utilities of varying health states and allow for comparisons across populations and different clinical settings. These health utility scores are useful as measures of outcome for quality of life and applicable to economic evaluation studies. Nonetheless, the measurement process can be cognitively challenging, and controversies remain regarding raters and rating methods.
