The variation of the estimated Weibull modulus ( m *), as a function of the coefficient of variation of the measured strength ( c v ), has been analyzed by using Monte Carlo simulations. A good linear relationship exists between m * and 1/ c v for a given sample size. A simple method is proposed for determining the Weibull modulus directly from the calculated c v value of a set of measured fracture stresses for a given material. From a statistical standpoint, the estimated results by using this new method are identical to those obtained with the conventional methods, such as the least‐squares method and the maximum likelihood method.
