Hepatozoon mocassini (Laveran, 1902) n. comb. from Agkistrodon piscivorus leucostoma (water moccasin) is redescribed by light microscopic study of all developmental stages and reclassified since mature oocysts contained sporocysts. Formerly this species was assigned to the genus Haemogregarina on the basis of a description of the gamonts. A neotype is designated because the original specimens cannot be located. Mature oocysts, containing sporocysts, developed in the hemocoel of the experimental host Aedes aegypti . These oocysts proved infective for A. piscivorus leucostoma when administered orally.
