SYNOPSIS. Isozymes of malic enzyme in Euglena gracilis strain Z were analyzed by starch‐gel electrophoresis. Wild‐type and heat‐bleached strains were cultured in the light and the dark in the presence of various carbon sources. An isozyme detectable in heterotrophic cultures was repressed by photosynthesis. A model is proposed to explain photorepression of this isozyme.
