SYNOPSIS. Large numbers of sessile ciliates were successfully collected in plastic petri dishes with tight‐fitting lids, transported in the water‐filled dishes without disturbance. Each species within the transparent dishes was identified with a dissecting microscope and the position on the dish surface of each sessile individual was located and recorded on graph paper for further quantitative comparisons. This method was used for numerous experiments on the ecology and behavior of sessile ciliates and their responses to toxins.
