A simple, rapid method of staining the external organelles of hypotrichous ciliates is described. Specimens are fixed and stained with Noland's combined phenol‐formaldehyde, gentian violet fixative and stain. The staining solution is displaced with iodized glycerine as soon as the external structures are stained to prevent it from coloring the cell body. Cirri and membranelles are stained jet black in sharp contrast to the clear amber background.
