Museum Victoria is custodian of the Royal Exhibition Building (REB) and its associated collections. The REB was home to Victoria's two World Fairs: the 1880 Melbourne International Exhibition and the 1888 Melbourne Centennial International Exhibition. At the close of these two exhibitions, a large amount of material was gifted to, or acquired by, the museum's predecessors. Documentation about these collections is rudimentary. This paper provides an account of a research project that has revealed the hidden history of one such collection: a group of “Poonah” figures that was exhibited at the 1880 Melbourne International Exhibition.
