If advances in health care during the past century were viewed through the eyes of citizens living in the year 1900, eradication of diseases such as polio and smallpox, and the use of antibiotics and a host of other pharmacologics to cure the seemingly incurable would have seemed miraculous. Now in 1999, we look forward to the beginning of a new millennium and a new century. What will health care providers be pondering and celebrating at the beginning of the 22nd century? What miraculous strides in health care will occur? Will professional nursing as we know it exist?
